The Next Week, a women’s magazine, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this week.
The title of its first issue is, in part, a tribute to the women who made the magazine possible.
The magazine’s founding editor, Susan Keesing, said it’s a testament to the hard work of women writers and editors who, she said, made the company what it is today.
“When we were young, there was no women’s magazines in this country,” she said.
“It’s the magazine that inspired us, and inspired me to do what I do.
So I’m very proud that our 25th issue has been so much more than just a celebration of women.”
For women, The Next Women is an important part of the cultural fabric.
Women are a major part of its readership, according to Keesling.
“They’re the one group that makes it all possible.”
Women’s magazines were, in the 1970s, considered taboo.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that the magazine industry started to embrace women and encourage them to publish more.
The Next Woman, Keesging said, was founded with the goal of helping women be heard.
“We wanted to make sure that women’s voices were being heard,” she explained.
The magazine has published more than a dozen women writers, editors, and contributors, including former Vice President Michelle Rhee and writer Michelle Goldberg.
Keesings said she was excited to be a part of that journey.
“This is the kind of magazine that was built to support women writers,” she continued.
“Women’s issues and women’s lives are important to us and to the culture.
So this is a celebration, and a celebration that I hope will be a very positive one.”
Women writers and contributors are a key part of The Next Magazine’s editorial team, as well.
Kesings said it was important to her to include women who are “the heart and soul of The Women.”
“We’re trying to keep a very close eye on what the women’s stories are about and to bring that in line with the women we cover,” she told ABC News.
Keesings also spoke to ABC News about her own personal journey as a woman and about the work she did for a group of young women in Washington, D.C. who were living in foster care.
The group, known as the Women in Courage Project, was trying to find a way to help people get out of foster care, which was a lot of trouble for them and a lot for their families, Keeings said.
She said that she was in the group with some of the other editors and was there for the first time when the project was born.
Kersing said that one of the reasons she chose to join the group was because it was “the best time to be out.”
“There were a lot more resources available and a ton more help and a better understanding of what it was that was going on in the foster care system,” she recalled.
“So, when I went into foster care with the group, it was the best time in my life to go out and do that work.”
Kersings also talked about the challenges that women face as a young woman growing up in the United States.
She also touched on her experiences working as an editor and writer for The Next Men, the magazine where she worked until this year.
“I think The Next Next Men has a special place in my heart because I really believe that the way that women are represented and the way women are treated is incredibly important,” she added.
“We’ve got to change the culture.”
