The Mitsukoshis department store chain announced Thursday that it will close its doors on Sept. 16.
It’s the first major retailer in Japan to close a store in a few months.
The company is closing about 200 stores, including its flagship flagship store in Tokyo’s Ginza neighborhood, which opened in September.
It said it will continue to focus on retailing, including selling products online.
The Mitsubishi Corp. said in a statement that it was closing its Ginza store due to the “bruise” caused by the closure.
The chain’s website is no longer accessible and its Twitter account was removed.
Its website is still showing up in Google searches for Ginza.
In addition to its Ginzilla store, the company has about 60 other stores in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo Metropolitan area, Osaka and other cities.
“The Ginza Shinjuku store is the only store of this type in Japan,” said Mitsukushi’s chief executive Yoshihiro Shiraishi.
“It is regrettable that this store is closing.”
The chain has been under pressure from the government and consumer groups over its handling of the deadly July earthquake and tsunami that left more than 230,000 people dead and millions homeless.
It was the first chain to close stores after the quake and tsunami hit Japan.
The earthquake and tsunamis triggered by the disaster killed more than 1.8 million people, displaced nearly half a million people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes.
Some Japanese retailers have been forced to close because of the costs incurred by their stores.
About 1.7 million people have been relocated and others are expected to be moved as the number of people displaced continues to grow.
The closure comes as the government has said it wants to open up more retail spaces to make room for more businesses, including restaurants and cafes.
The government has also begun building public parks and a network of shopping malls.
It wants to build 1.3 million more retail parks, or “laboratories,” to accommodate the expected surge in tourism.
The Ministry of Finance said in June it wants 1.5 million more parks and 1.4 million more public spaces.
The country’s economy grew by 7.9 percent in the first quarter of the year, the weakest since the global financial crisis.
About 8 million people worked in retail last year.
The number of retail jobs in Japan was about 10 million, the government said.
About 12 percent of Japanese adults are employed in retail, according to a survey conducted by a research institute in June.
